THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL
by Richard Brinsley Sheridan
directed by John Hull
Costumes by Maria Graham
Sheridan's rowdy comedy about gossip, deceit and misjudgment, adapted and directed by John Hull, is a fast paced romp. Two brothers seem complete opposites. One is a studious and sober while the other parties away every
night spending borrowed money. When their rich uncle
returns after a long sojourn in the East he assumes
false identities to check up on them. Meanwhile an old
man married to a young woman has suspicions about her.
Is he right? And if so, who is the lover? All the
while the gossips wag their scandalous tongues and a
chaste, level-headed young lady is pursued by the
young gallants.
Updated from its original 1777 setting to swinging
London of the 1960s, Maria Graham's costumes bring a
vibrant brightness to the show, presented "arena
style" for close up viewing.
